Joburg Tennis: Unite, Play, Thrive

 

News

The Joburg Tennis AGM was held at the end of August 2025. The following awards were handed out:

  • Junior Player of the Year
  • Young Player of the Year
  • Masters Player of the Year
  • Player of the Year
  • Volunteer of the Year.

Congratulations to the receivers of the awards!

 

James Hart – Junior Player of the Year

  • Selected as a hitting partner for the Davis Cup Squad for the tie between SA and Vietnam in February 2024. Selection was a result of him winning the U18 Masters Title at the end of 2023 (as a first year).
  • Represented South Africa at the Africa Junior Championships.
  • Quarter finals at 2024 Nationals.
  • Jhb J100: lost in quarters to Australian Ty Host.
  • PTA J60: lost in quarters to Ellison Minnaar from GBR.
  • J60 in Windhoek: runner-up to Mpho Leshoele from Lesotho.

 

Lilitha Ndungane – Young Player of the Year

  • Attended Arkansas University in Fall 2024 and Spring 2025.
  • Selected to represent SA at Billy Jean Cup Group III Africa Tournament in Nairobi, Kenya, where SA won the event to be promoted to Group II in 2025.
  • 3rd in Women’s Tshwane Super 8 singles and winner of the doubles title.
  • Plays in mixed and Bundes leagues when in SA.

 

Duard Botha – Masters Player of the Year

  • Current #1 player in age group.
  • Winner of Jozi Super 6 Masters M65 Singles.
  • Winner of Tshwane Masters Super 6 M65.
  • Winner of ITF Masters SA Nationals M65.

  • Winner of GE Super 6 Masters M65.
  • Participated in 60+ IPT.
  • Regular player in all leagues in JT.
  • Participated in World Champs in 2023.

 

Shane Furrows – Player of the Year

  • A regular participant in JT leagues.
  • Unbeaten at #1 in Bundes.
  • Helped lead his team to the 2024 Bundes Team Title.
  • Winner of American Express Tshwane Super 8 Men’s Singles.
  • Winner of American Express Joburg Super 8 Men’s Singles.
  • Winner of American Express Ekurhuleni Super 8 Men’s Singles.
  • Winner of Joburg Wilson Marks Park Grand Prix Men’s Singles.

 

Alec Galanakis – Volunteer of the Year

  • Developed a plan and budget for Grassroots Tennis Foundation (implemented in 2025) to take children from schools surrounding Ellis Park and provide access to tennis.
  • Historian and avid tennis fan who launched a tennis blog at the end of 2023 with tributes and stories of SA and international tennis stars.
  • Chairman of JT Masters.
  • Loyal Marks Park member and on the club tennis and main club committee.
  • Active social member and league player.
